Which measurement is bigger?
The recorded length of Blue whale is 2.794 times the recorded length of Tyrannosaurus rex. The selected measurements are 33.5 m and 12 m, respectively.
| Object | Metric size | Imperial size | Dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue whale | 33.5 m | 110 ft | length |
| Tyrannosaurus rex | 12 m | 39.4 ft | length |
What this comparison measures
Compare a large Antarctic blue whale with the museum’s T. rex reconstruction, both measured from head to tail. The whale figure is an upper living-animal length; the dinosaur figure is a fossil-based estimate.
Blue whale: Up to 110 feet for Antarctic blue whales; an upper size, not a typical adult.
Tyrannosaurus rex: Museum body length estimate of 12 m; larger specimens exist.
The drawings use the same physical scale, but are simplified illustrations. They show a selected linear dimension rather than mass, surface area or volume. The space between objects makes the comparison readable and does not represent a real-world separation.
Inspect the sources
Both measurement sources are linked below the interactive board. The individual Blue whale entry and Tyrannosaurus rex entry provide the selected conventions and related objects.
Change either selection to explore another pair. The full size comparison tool also lets you enter a personal height. To practise estimating rather than reading the answer first, try the daily five.
